CHAPTER 20

A Dramatic Arrival

BEFORE WE MOVE on to 2013, there’s one more event from 2012 that I have to tell you about, although it’s nothing to do with strongman. This was a thousand times more stressful, although on the up-side I didn’t have to lift a finger. The event in question was the birth of my son, Maximus, who was born on 10 July.

Maximus had been planned; Alex and I had even spoken about having kids on the day I asked her to marry me. We’d chatted about all aspects of our future that day and in celebration of our new life together Alex came off the pill the next day. About three months later she sat me down and told me she was pregnant, so as well as being a planned baby, he was a bloody quick one too. He ended up arriving four weeks after our wedding day.

Unlike I had with Layla, I actually managed to attend the birth from the start this time around. But the labour itself was very long and about half way through I actually went away to train for a few hours. That might sound a bit off to some people but hey, life goes on. That’s my job and if I don’t train, I don’t get paid. The midwife said I had plenty of time so while Alex was panting away in the hospital, I was pumping away in the gym.

A few hours later I was back in the hospital with Alex and because I was knackered after training I crashed on the floor and started nodding off. Suddenly, I heard an alarm going off and when I opened my eyes all I could see were red flashing lights and Alex being wheeled off by some nurses. I leapt to my feet to follow them, and fortunately one of the nurses waited behind for me to tell me what was happening in response to my frantic questions. Apparently there was a problem with Maximus’s heartbeat and they were going to have to give Alex a caesarian. Poor Alex had lost consciousness by now and even though I was only peering in through a window in the door she seemed to be in a really bad way. These few minutes were some of the worst of my entire life and for all that time – which felt like eternity – I honestly thought I was losing them both. The feeling of helplessness was unbearable and when I eventually heard Maximus scream for the very first time, after being delivered by caesarean section, I almost collapsed with relief. It was like being pulled out of a fiery pit.

About five minutes later I was allowed into the delivery room and was able to hold Maximus for the first time. Alex was still unconscious at this point and although they’d told me several times that she was going to be OK I was still as nervous as hell. Not only do I love Alex to pieces but I need her, and now Maximus needed her.
